"Our Savior Jesus Christ is indeed knocking at the door. He undeniably is pleading for the chance to assist. His hand is stretched out still and will never fail." This is a message for all.
Outside of a good movie and a nap, or seeing the bathroom scale (in a good way) go boldly to where it has never gone before (or at least not in the last 10 to 20 or more years); or finally having the chance to turn your brain off after a hard day and not having to think about anything—what brings you the most joy and happiness?
If we could narrow down the many lanes of traffic within the heart and human mind and just focus on the one or two areas that bring us the greatest sense of peace and quiet assurance in life—what would they be? What would be left on the table? What would be of most interest?
Foundations of Faith, Hope & Love offers for consideration, that it is indeed the ability to keep our faith, hope and love alive that brings us our greatest sense of happiness and well-being. That despite whatever the twists and turns of life may bring, it is knowing that we are able to keep these wonderful fruits of the Spirit—independent and on solid ground—regardless of what may or may not be happening or going on in our lives.
Conversely, when life is unfair, unsteady or not progressing the way that we want; if we start to see our faith, hope and love beginning to decrease and wane, it is in these moments of uncertainty that we may find our greatest sense of concern. If the cause of that which is leaving us unsettled is left unresolved, we may certainly wonder if joy and happiness will be
replaced with sorrow and sadness. If our love for ourselves or others—will begin to wax cold and turn to indifference, bitterness, anger or even hatred. If hope and faith will eventually be replaced with despair and fear.
So, with that cheery preface in mind, what does all the above have to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ or even the topic of religion in general? For years it seems that religion has been pushed further and further into the fringe of conversation; an off topic that is no longer relevant within the public forum. But when we stop and think about what the gospel of Jesus Christ is within its truest sense, it is designed to keep us free from that which would make our life a burden. It is there to keep that which matters most in life—even our faith, hope and love—alive. It is indeed the “perfect law of liberty” (Holy Bible, James 1:25) that leads us to find and become our best selves.
Additionally, as we take our time here on earth, many have sought for that which is able to make sense of it all. Why are we here? Where did we come from? Where do we go after this life? Are there voices of clarity worthy of an individual’s trust and sincere confidence, or is it all just a bunch of “cunningly devised fables” (Holy Bible, 2 Peter 1:16). Taking a moment or two for those in favor of a voice of clarity, we find:
Between Hell and Heaven there is a space. Even a space between that which hates and despises light and seeks to utterly bury truth—and another place which loves and is literally glorified in light and truth. Between these two extremes we do indeed find a space that is filled with our individual choices. Choices which most certainly determine our ability (or inability) to recognize, move towards and act upon that which is truth and light. Every day, every hour, every minute, all the choices we make involving our very thoughts, words, and deeds—moves us in one direction or the other. There is no middle ground. (See Ensign, Nov. 2000, p.39.)
Foundations of Faith, Hope & Love (Foundations) is not a book that promises something for nothing. Nor is it a book that will leave everyone feeling brilliantly marvelous and instantly splendid; especially when one realizes that what is comfortable will more than likely need to be replaced and sacrificed in order to receive something better. But it is a book that may very well provide an answer to someone’s desperate plea as they face their individual trial of faith. An answer to the question as to whether they walk alone or if there is someone who walks at their side and is perfectly mindful of them. Foundations may also provide the reader with their first introduction to the most remarkable and extraordinary message upon the earth today—even the message of the restored gospel and Church of Jesus Christ.
Forty years ago, as a young missionary and a relatively new member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the author of Foundations had the opportunity to start a research project involving the powerful convictions of truth contained within the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since then, what started as a simple project to help a young missionary learn the principles of the gospel, has developed into a 3,000 plus page manuscript organized in over 240 gospel topics. This topical reference was then used as a basis for the development and writing of Foundations.
For some, Foundations may prove to be uncharted waters, it may even challenge deeply held ideas and individual beliefs about God and religious faith in general; however, the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is definitely worth the challenge. It is indeed the greatest message that exists on the earth today. So, if you’re interested in a first or second look at the benefits of religious faith; even a renewed perspective concerning the powerful convictions of truth contained within the gospel of Jesus Christ—Foundations of Faith, Hope, & Love was written with you and your interests in mind. Our Savior Jesus Christ is indeed knocking at the door. He undeniably is pleading for the chance to assist. His hand is stretched out still and will never, ever fail. This truly is a message for all.
